Fun first on the agenda for Wrekin Juniors

Wrekin Juniors are gearing up for the new campaign with enjoyment top of president Brian Chambers' agenda.

Juniors will be entering their 17th season and boast more than 20 sides which compete in the Telford Junior League and Shropshire Girls and Ladies League.

Chambers has been involved with the club for 16 years and is delighted with the progress, both on and off the field.

He said: "We now have over 20 teams including four girls teams and mini-soccer for six-year-olds. There are over 300 kids who play for us and we have been going for 17 years now.

"The club is growing and going from strength to strength and we are a Charter Standard club."

While the club toasted a number of on-field successes last season, Chambers' mantra is fun first, results second.

He said: "I got involved because my two sons played,. I have been here 16 years now and taken on various roles including secretary and treasurer. It's a family club and it's not all about winning for me.

"We did well as a club last season and a few sides won their leagues and some won cup finals at the New Bucks Head, but for me it's about the kids enjoying their football.

"It's about getting them off the sofa and off their computers or games consoles and out there playing and having fun with their mates.

"Some of our under-eights were signed by Shrewsbury and now they can't play with their mates. Personally, I think that's a shame."

Chambers has the support and backing of a hard-working and dedicated committee, as the club tackle the ever-growing demands associated with running a junior football club.

Chambers added: "It's hard work at times but I am lucky to have 11 other committee members, who work hard and give me great support.

"We have never had our own base. We play and train throughout the area. It cost us £14,000 for pitches and winter training facilities last year.

"That is raised by subscriptions and from our sponsors. We have around 30 sponsors for the various teams which is great, and we are really grateful for their support."

As part of the club's drive to encourage more females to play they are staging a free football session next month, in association with the Shropshire Football Association and FA Skills programme.

The session is scheduled for Wednesday, August 27 from 10am to noon at the HLC Playing Fields, TF1 5NU. To reserve a place contact Gareth Whiston, Wrekin Juniors FC Girls secretary, on 07946 531 412.

The club's under-12 Tigers are seeking players to play in the Telford Junior League. Contact manager Jamie Harris on 07866 381 945.
