The New Saints bowed out of the UEFA Champions League after suffering a valiant second qualifying round exit at Videoton in the Hungarian heat.

After being greeted with sweltering conditions at the Sostoi Stadion, the Welsh Premier champions knew they would have to deep if they were to overturn a one-goal deficit from the first leg.

But they warmed to the task in searing temperatures touching 40 degrees Celsius in the early evening.

They produced a stirring second leg display in Szekesfehervar before going down to an extra time strike from Adam Gyuroso.

The New Saints: P Harrison, S Spender, C Marriott, K Edwards, C Rawlinson, S Finley, C Seargeant (M Williams 72), A Edwards, A Cieslewicz (S Quigley 65), J Mullan (Draper 109), M Wilde.

Subs not used: P Baker, A Darlington, J Reed, C Mullock.

Videoton FC: B Danilovic, A Fejes, R Juhasz (P Vinicius 65), R Szolnoki, M Ivanovski (I Kovacs 56), A Lang, D Trebotic, M Patkai, A Gyuroso, K Luijckx (A Simon 86), F Oliveira.

The game was on a knife's edge, before Saints substitute Matt Williams struck 12 minutes from time to take the tie into extra time after earning the Oswestry men victory on the night.

It was tense and frantic, TNS put their bodies on the line in the extra period before being carved open on the break as Adam Gyuroso, goalscorer in the first leg, fired past goalkeeper Paul Harrison to settle the outcome.

TNS midfielder Sam Finley was then sent off in the closing stages for an off the ball incident.

The Saints made an encouraging start and carved the game's first chance when Mike Wilde weaved his way into the box, but fired his angled shot into the side netting.

Videoton sounded a warning moments later when Mate Patkai forced keeper Paul Harrison into a smart low save, but the Hungarians looked vulnerable at the back.

Despite the humidity, the Oswestry visitors looked comfortable with Wilde firing another effort wide.

They were often quick to break, as Videoton struggled to keep possession in front of their increasingly-frustrated fans.

Dinko Trebotic wasted a golden chance for the Hungarians when dragging a free-kick wide from the edge of the box, while Filipe Oliveira fired weakly at Harrison as another promising position went begging.

Harrison pulled off another timely stop to deny Oliveira after the defence had been carved open, and then thwarted Mirko Ivanovski's free header when the Videoton forward should have done better.

Off colour Vidi started the second-half with renewed purpose, putting the Saints under pressure with captain Harrison tipping away Trebotic's strike from distance.

But the visitors almost struck when Wilde went agonisingly close to adding to his four-goal tally in the competition, when his header was cleared off the line.

However, they were deservedly back on terms on aggregate on 78 minutes when fine work by Simon Spender on the right found sub Williams, who fired home from close range.

With the heat taking its toll in extra time, the pace slowed as Videoton pushed forward but failed to make the most of what chances were on offer.

Wilde went close with a late header, but it was not to be for the valiant Saints.
