Their quartet of Lizzie Harvey, Jamie Porter, Sam Rogers and Callum Westwood triumphed by just a single point, beating Market Drayton into second place.

Their score of 217 proved decisive while Hawkstone Park finished just two shots behind on a packed leader-board to claim third place. Lilleshall Hall were fourth with 220.

Shropshire & Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs junior chairman Charles Sievewright said: "Shifnal did very well, but it could not have been closer and it went right down to the wire."

The team championship was one of three trophies up for grabs on the day, as part of the Shropshire & Herefordshire Junior Handicap Championships.

The individual overall prize was captured by Ryan Eagleton, who plays out of the Shropshire, while Georgia Anderson, from Market Drayton, claimed the girls' title.

Eagleton carded a winning nett score of 67 to edge out Shifnal's Callum Westwood, who finished just one shot behind.

Teddy Hall of Horsehay Village was third despite carding the same score, losing out to Westwood on count back.

Anderson, who finished fourth overall, scored 69 to win the girls competition ahead of Shifnal's Harvey and Sophie Johnson, who came second and third.

Bridgnorth's Conor White, who last weekend won the men's county open, came fifth overall as well as claiming the prize for best gross following his fine round of 70.

Johnson claimed the best gross for the girls for her excellent 78. Sievewright added: "We had a fantastic field of 93 players at Telford, which included 16 girls and 77 boys.

"Congratulations to Ryan Eagleton and Georgia Anderson, as well as Shifnal. We had 15 clubs represented in the team competition and it was a great day.

"The weather held up and, hopefully, all of the players enjoyed the competition."
