Moreton School come off second best

Moreton School can lay claim to being the second best team in the UK after finishing runners-up in the School Magazine Under-15 Girls' National Cricket finals.

The talented youngsters were edged out in the finals day showdown by last year's winners Brighton College in a competition that saw 35 teams from around the country competing for the silverware.

As well as the team claiming second spot, Moreton's Milly Home was not only the top run-scorer on finals day with 105 runs, but also topped the run-scoring charts for the entire competition.

Moreton's semi-final clash against Shenfield Community College proved a tense affair.

After opting to bat first, Moreton lost wickets in the third and fourth overs before Home (41) steadied the innings with Tallulah Blackman as Moreton totalled 120-8 from their 20 overs.

Shenfield started well in response but were checked as Freya Beasley, Ellie Mason and Lottie Clarke claimed wickets.

The game went down to the last over with Shenfield needing five off two balls. But Beasley bowled a dot ball before the final delivery conceded just one to see Moreton into the final.

In the final, Brighton College posted an impressive 143 runs. Home and Blackman again led the response, Home top-scoring with 64. But when she fell in the 18th over, Moreton's victory hopes were dashed.
