Hopefuls eye the big final at Shropshire boxing championships
Championship boxing begins for 2016 in Shropshire tomorrow as the England Youth Championship gets the year's programme under way.
Young pugilists will enter the tournament in the West Midlands regional round, hoping to punch their way through to the national final.
One age range - competitors born in either 1998 or 1999 - will house the hopefuls, who will be split into weight classes before being whittled down to an area champion.
Tristan Davies' Donnington fight factory will host the first phase at the Telford district's Sports & Social Club, on Turreff Avenue from 1pm. The weigh in will take place at 10am to 12pm, with the first bell from 1pm. Spectators can attend, with entrance £10 for adults and £5 children.
Donnington are entering Ryan Tyrer in the 56kg category, while reigning European Youth boss Akash Tuqir is campaigning back at 52kg.
Hadley's Tuqir, who is still guided by Telford-based coach Khalid Hussain but represents Merridale in Wolverhampton, has something to prove.
The tall southpaw took gold at the Euros in Poland, but was beaten at the previous Youth national final and still has yet to win a national title.
