Records tumble as county aces shine

Eleven clubs battled it out for the annual Shropshire ASA championships at Wolverhampton Central Baths.

The second instalment, which took place over Saturday and Sunday, was again dominated by Ellemere College's Titans swimming team, which attracts some of the best talent from across the country through its scholarship programme.

But there were also notable winners from the likes of Bridgnorth's Northgate Swimming Club, Oswestry Otters, Wrekin College and Ludlow Swimming Club, particularly within the younger age groups.

Jean Childs, who sits on the ASA's executive committee and helped organise the event, said: "It went really well again and although things were a bit hectic it seemed to be a very successful meet.

"A number of county and regional junior records were broken. Lots of the swimmers also managed to reach the Midland championship qualifying times.

"We were very well looked after by everyone in Wolverhampton and the feedback we've received has been good too so we're all very pleased."

Claimed

The Titans' domination saw several Shropshire records fall, some of which had been standing for 10 years.

Adam Metcalf's time of 59.53 in the final of the U15 boys butterfly beat Dan Walker's record, which had stood since 2009. Metcalf also claimed the county record in the U15 boys individual medley.

Jacob Jackson, aged 18, broke the boys 16 and over 100m butterfly time, as well as claiming Charlie Turner's 10-year record in the boys 16 and over 50m freestyle, shaving off two-hundredths of a second.

Jackson also broke the boys 16 and over 400m freestyle and 100m individually medley records.

Northgate's Louise Edmunds posted a record-breaking time of 35.31 in the U14 girls 50m breaststroke.

Titans' Charlie Hutchison beat George Lester's 10-year record after posting 28.96 in the U14 boys 50m backstroke and also holds the U14 boys 400m freestyle county record.

Freya Anderson stole three records from her Titan team-mate, Tazmin Pugh, in the girls U15 freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 200m individual medley events.

She also claimed the Shropshire record in the U15 girls 200m breaststroke.

Phoebe Griffiths, aged 16, broke the county best in the girls 16 and over 200m freestyle, Adam Metcalf in boys U15 50m freestyle, Chloe Golding, aged 18, in girls 16 and over 200m individual medley, and Gordon Mason in the boys 16 and over 1,500m freestyle.

Stand-out performers from the county's other teams included Northgate's Ava Martin, a four-time winner who claimed the U12 girls 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke titles.

Three-time winner Harriet Smith of Wrekin College triumphed in the U12 girls 50m butterfly, 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley.

Ben Simister of Oswestry Otters in the U12 boys backstroke, Ludlow Swimming Club's Oliver Morgan in the U13 boys 100m backstroke and Shrewsbury's Robert Cowley, aged 19, in the boys 16 and over 100m breaststroke also won their heats.

Further Northgate winners included Louise Edmunds and Andy Jones, who won the U14 girls 200m breaststroke and U12 boys 50m breaststroke races.

The next countywide event will be in July for the summer development weekend.

The competition is open to all those who have not achieved national or Midland qualifying times to give all swimmers more chance at competing in higher end competition.

Childs said: "Those who have reached the qualifying standard can still compete but must race in an event where they haven't reached the Midland times.

"It has been really well received and it's important to give youngsters the chance to compete against other clubs.

"It's another opportunity to swim at a higher level and it shows how swimming in Shropshire is really on the up. All we need now is a decent pool somewhere in the county so we can develop our talent further."
