Telford karate trio bring home the medals
Telford club Zanshin-do Karate came away from the English and European Karate Organisation championships with three top three places.
Eleven-year-old Callum Barclay, a purple belt, fought his way to second place in the under-16 height restricted kumite category winning six contests.
Meanwhile, 13-year-old Leon Winnall gained a third place medal in a separate under-16 Kumite category.
Senior fighter and black belt Gary Ward added to an impressive career trophy haul with a third place in the adult male brown belt and above category, also winning six contests during the event in Birmingham.
Ward, Matt Quayle, Winnall, Harry Williams and Dan Musu competed in individual kumite contests.
Elliott Holderbaum, Leland Edwards and Barclay doubled up to compete in kumite and kata events, which are pre-arranged sequences.
All members progressed through various stages of their respective championships while in the Team Kumite event.
Ward, Williams and Musu were narrowly beaten in the quarter-finals by the eventual winners. Club owner Alison Lowe was delighted with the results.
She said: "Several were competing for the first time in a larger than usual competitor entry list from Britain, some European countries and a particularly strong UK-based Japanese and Philippine representation.
"We'd like to praise our club members for their technical ability, determination and sportsmanship."
