Hill Valley Golf Club captains drive in

Captains at Hill Valley Golf Club began their year in the usual tradition with a ceremonial drive-in down the first tee.

Club captain Richard Wynn, ladies captain Carol Pickering, senior captain Martin Williams and club president John Cooke all took part in the 'captain's drive-in.'

It's an annual event which celebrates the start of the new season. Members were set the challenge of trying to predict who would drive the furthest distance.

The tradition was started in St Andrews in 1754 and resulted in the winner being awarded the position of golf captain and a silver club.

The R & A still maintain the tradition and though the winner no longer receives a silver golf club, the caddie who collects the captain's ball is presented with a sovereign to mark the occasion.

Nowadays the captain is chosen by the members for his or her ability to support and create a successful golf season for the members.

Hill Valley, near Whitchurch, is eager to welcome new members to the club whether they are low or high handicappers.
