Liam Davies ruled out of England debut

Liam Davies has suffered a double heartbreak after injuries relating to his England Elite Championships challenge ruled him out of making his debut for his country.

Davies was due to feature at 56kg in the Elite Three Nations, which will be staged by host nation Scotland in Dunfermline for three days from May 26.

But the 20-year-old bantamweight cannot box on doctors orders for 30 days due to the problems that ruled him out of the Elite national final on May 1, writes Craig Birch.

The Donnington Boxing Club star endured a heartbreaking end to his run, after beating two seeds in succession on his way to meet the favourite.

But swelling over both eyes and a nick below his right in battle needed an inspection, before the bout was due to take place. The officials then ruled him out.

Great Britain podium boxer Peter McGrail, claimed the belt by default and Davies was presented with the runners-up trophy.

But McGrail couldn't make the Three Nations due to his obligations with Team GB, so Davies was picked. A losing semi-finalist will now have to be selected.

Meanwhile, Liam brother's and club-mate Brayden Davies, with both trained by father and Donnington coach Tristan, will fight in this weekend's England Schools Championships after all.

He was initially handed a bye past Sunday's national quarter-finals, which will be staged at the famed Birtley Boxing Club in Gateshead.

His last eight match was missed off the paperwork, so he now has an opponent at 41.5kg in Class B (entrants born 2002).

Davies, who is one win away from matching his best ever-run in the competition, will take on Cameron Olmonde, from Horsley Hill in South Shields.

Wellington Boxing Academy's Hamza Uddin is the other Shropshire entrant, at 31kg in the 'minors' (born 2004) ranks. He's been paired with Birtley's own Billy Hope.
