Beighton, from Shrewsbury, represented Great Britain in rowing in London 2012 and narrowly missed out on a medal in the mixed double sculls.

He has since switched to Paracanoe and did enough at the British Championships to secure a nomination for Rio. The squad will be officially confirmed next Tuesday.

The 34-year-old, who lost both his legs in 2009 while serving in Afghanistan, said: "The last couple of years have been a joy.

"I have really savoured the paddling and the squad environment and being part of something bigger.

"It will be a real honour to represent Britain again and to go and enjoy the environment and the celebration of sport and human endeavour and all the things that are great about the Paralympics.

"It is about racing and putting yourself out there and taking pride in what other people are achieving also."
