Euro 2016: England 2 Wales 1 as it happened in the Shropshire fanzone

The Shropshire Star's Sue Austin reported from Shropshire's very own Euro 2016 'fanzone' as England beat Wales 2-1 this afternoon.

The match has brought a new passion for football to the Shropshire/Welsh border. Drive through Oswestry or villages such as St Martins and flags depicting the Red Dragon and the Cross of St George are hoisted side by side.

Such is the crossover along the border that many Welsh fans now live in Shropshire and vice versa. There are even Welsh and English fans within individual families.

Nowhere is that meshing of countries more keenly felt that at the New Saints Football Club, the Welsh Premier Champions and winners of the Welsh Cup, whose ground is over the border in England at Park Hall near Oswestry.

Its current squad includes a dozen Welshmen and eight players from England, along with a recently signed Scot and a handful of international footballers.

The Venue, the home of TNS went all out to ensure that both sets of fans enjoy the game and also invited about 100 local schoolchildren to watch the match.

Shropshire Star reporter, Sue Austin, herself born in Wales with an English mum and a Scottish Dad and living a couple of miles into England was at The Venue to watch the match.
