Shropshire's stars in the running for glory

Shropshire schools' track and field team are gunning for glory in Gateshead this weekend.

The talented youngsters are taking part in the 86th staging of the English Schools Track and Field Championships, which got underway today.

The 25-strong team is made up of athletes who this year have all achieved the English Schools' entry standard, but also includes 12 youngsters who have gained the higher national standard.

The championships see teams from every county in England battling it out for honours.

Emily Ball from the Marches School, Oswestry, who is taking part in the senior girls shot, has been chosen as the team captain.

Junior Boys: Oliver Carvell (Bridgnorth Endowed) 1500m; Jack Lambert (Lacon Childe) Hammer; Toby Jones (William Brookes) Discus

Intermediate Boys: Niall Price (Bridgnorth Endowed) 100m; Jack Finn (Thomas Telford) 400m; Adrian Lloyd- Davies (Idsall) 800m; Connor Bentley (Adams Newport) 3000m; James Milburn (Ludlow) Triple Jump.

Senior Boys: Rio Mitcham (Thomas Telford) 200m; Alex Burrows (William Brookes) 1500m; Jack Brothers (Thomas Telford) 110m Hurdles; Stan Willis (Shrewsbury Sixth Form College) 3000m.

Junior Girls: Lucy Elcock (Idsall) 200m.

Intermediate Girls: Megan Broad (Thomas Telford) 200m; Francesca Scott (The Corbet ) 80m Hurdles; Beth Loveday (Bridgnorth Endowed) Long Jump; Bethan Evans (Thomas Adams) Triple Jump; Ellie Vernon (Thomas Telford) Javelin.
