Wimbledon proves dreams come true, says Lawn Tennis Association's Shropshire-based president
Fresh from celebrating Andy Murray's win at Wimbledon, the Shropshire-based president of the Lawn Tennis Association is set for a hectic summer.
Cathie Sabin, from Much Wenlock, has spent the past few weeks in Wimbledon overseeing proceedings at the legendary courts.
A former teacher at Idsall School in Shifnal, she said this year's competition had been fantastic for British players – despite the indifferent weather.
She said: "Once we had got over the bad weather it was a great Championships.
"Marcus Willis has proved that dreams can come true and what about Heather Watson in her first grand slam?"
This week she has been preparing to fly to Serbia for the Davis Cup which will take place in Belgrade.
She is very active in her role, and will be planning to spend much of the summer attending as many major tournaments as she can across the world, including the Olympics at Rio.
Cathie has held the role of president since December 2013, and is the first female president of the association.
The former vice-president and member of Bridgnorth Tennis Club, replaced Peter Bretherton. A player for the Shropshire senior team for many years, Sabin was sworn in at the LTA's annual general meeting at the Roehampton National Tennis Centre in London.
Sabin was elected LTA deputy president in December 2010 and is a member of the main board of Lawn Tennis Limited.
She is a qualified referee and former player for the county.
Sabin is also a member of the LTA child protection committee, the LTA equality diversity and inclusion committee and is chairman of the Tennis Foundation Education Advisory group.
Interested in all sports, playing netball, cricket, hockey and lacrosse, as well as tennis, Cathie chaired the Shropshire Management Committee and co-ordinated the county closed championships for many years.
Eager to promote opportunities for young people, she has trained many ball crew teams for nationals and pro-series events.
A founder trustee of the William Penny Brookes Foundation, promoting cultural and sporting opportunities for young people, Sabin is a trustee of the Tennis Foundation and chair of the Education Advisory Group.
Locally, she reopened Bridgnorth's tennis courts after a £40,000 refurbishment in May 2012.
