Hankey again came within a game of making the last 16 as he becomes increasingly active on the organisation's circuit,

'The Count' had last time shared the oche with fellow former world champion Martin Adams at the same stage of the European Classic.

'Wolfie' prevailed from that tie with a 4-1 victory and, on this occasion, Hankey was whitewashed 4-0 by Belgium's Andy Baetens to bow out of the competition.

The 48-year-old, who lives in Aqueduct, had been progressing well to that point and already registered three wins.

He got a bye past the last 512 before beating Joey Smout 4-2, then defeating Sven Carlier by 4-0 landslide. Another 4-2 verdict, over Julio Barbero Gonzalez, set up the group decider.
