Rio Paralympics 2016: Shrewsbury's Nick Beighton wins bronze in KL2 final
Shrewsbury's Nick Beighton has won a Paralympic bronze medal in the men's KL2 final today.
The former Army captain, who lost both of his legs while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, just missed out on the podium at the London 2012 Games – he finished fourth with Sam Scowen in the mixed scull.
After a two-year break, Beighton returned in the sport of paracanoeing and finished third in the individual KL2.
The 34-year-old finished second in heat two yesterday with a time of 45.970 seconds
Meanwhile, Jim Roberts, of Welshpool, scored 27 points as Team GB suffered a narrow defeat to reigning world and Paralympic champions Australia in the wheelchair rugby.
Tournament favourites Australia did not let their lead slip once after first going ahead through Andrew Harrison in the opening minute.
Roberts kept the Brits, who also had Wolverhampton's Alan Ash in their squad, within touching distance of the victory, with Gavin Walker and Ayaz Bhuta also impressing.
Ultimately it was not be and they fell to a 53-51 defeat.
Team GB – the 2015 European champions – will look to get a victory as they go up against Canada today (12.45pm).
