Shawbury United close to safety after home win

Shawbury United took a big step towards survival in the Midland Premier as they won 2-1 against AFC Wulfrunians.

Dave Richards's men are now 13th in the table and while a top-half is finish not out of the question, they will still be wary of what is going on below as they are six points clear of the drop zone.

Thomas Taylor opened the scoring after 21 minutes with a bullet header.

Josh Thomas doubled the advantage shortly into the second period with a cool finish and after having what they felt was a clear penalty ignored, Wulfs pulled one back to make for a nervy finish.

In addition, Steve Faux and the away side's Richard Palmer were sent off after a meaty 50/50 challenge.

"I am more than happy with the result," said Richards.

"We need to be winning our home games – and that was a massive win. Steve's suspended for three games, which is a blow, but winning was the main thing."
