Rachel Atherton 'devastated' as injury ends run
Downhill mountain bike ace Rachel Atherton’s record run of World Cup victories was ended in dramatic fashion by a dislocated shoulder.
The 29-year-old rider, from Llanrhaeadr on the Shropshire/Mid-Wales border, was forced to sit out yesterday’s race at Fort William after suffering the injury during a practice run.
World champion Atherton, who had won the previous 14 World Cup races dating back to 2015, admitted she was ‘absolutely devastated’ to miss the event.
She posted on Instagram: “Not how I imagined spending Fort William World Cup! Absolutely devastated to dislocate my left shoulder in practice this morning, off the ridiculously slow muddy sticky drop in the woods. With the help of a guy on the side of the track we relocated it – X-Rays show nothing broken but I have to sit out the race.”
The boggy woods claimed a number of other victims over the event, which was won by Australia’s Tracey Hannah.
