David Goodfield and England take third
David Goodfield pitched in to help England secure a third-place finish in the Hero Hockey World League semi-final in London.
The ex-Telford & Wrekin star, who now plays for London outfit Surbiton, was included in Bobby Crutchley’s side for yesterday’s third-fourth placed play-off clash with Malaysia, where the hosts claimed a comfortable 4-1 success.
England missed out on a place in the final, going down 2-0 to the Netherlands in their last four tie.
Former Thomas Telford school student Goodfield, one of the newer members of the England side, claimed a starting place in Saturday’s defeat after climbing off the bench to score a crucial goal in the quarter-final success over Canada.
The 24-year-old had featured heavily for England in their Pool A group, where they finished second behind Argentina. England had already seen off Malaysia as 7-3 winners earlier in the competition.
It caps an impressive 2017 for midfielder Goodfield who earlier this year claimed the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with Team GB.
The third-place finish secured a World League Finals spot in India later this year, while England qualified for next year’s World Cup in India with their semi-final spot.
The competition was won by the Netherlands who thrashed world No.1 Argentina 6-1 in yesterday’s final.
