Bronze for judo stars Gemma Howell and Kelly Edwards
Telford judo stars Gemma Howell and Kelly Edwards added to their growing medal collection with a bronze each at the European Cup event in Saarbrucken, Germany.
Howell battled through the repecharge in the under-70kg weight category, while Edwards was so close to reaching the final of the under-52kg, losing her semi-final to eventual silver medallist Galiya Sagitova, of Russia.
Edwards, 26, had earlier accounted for Kim Eiden of Luxembourg, Daria Bobrikova of Russia and Belgium’s Amber Ryheul before picking herself up from defeat to Sagitova to defeat Brillith Gamarra Carbajal in the bronze medal match.
Howell, 27, won three bouts after being knocked out of the main competition by eventual silver medallist Assmaa Niang, from Morocco, overcoming Switzerland’s Allna Lengweiler to take home a medal from the bronze play-off.
