Anderson's performance in Glasgow on the final leg, when she timed 1:56.0 in the process of overhauling leaders Russia, was all the more impressive given she had been in the pool less than an hour previously to qualify for the individual 100m freestyle final.

Eleanor Faulkner, Kathryn Greenslade and Holly Hibbott had put the 17-year-old Ellesmere Titan in position to fight for a medal but gold looked in doubt until the teenager's explosive final leg.

It was the second day running she had anchored a team to glory after leading the mixed 4x100m medley relay team to victory on Monday.

"I enjoy having a bit of pressure on me as it gets me going. I saw I was being caught and it really hurt, but I wanted to do it for the girls," she said.
