Shrewsbury Town defender Morgan Feeney picked up an ankle injury in training yesterday after a collision with Charles Sagoe Jr.
The Town defender, who has started 12 League One games this season and has captained when Carl Winchester has not been available, was left out of the matchday squad for Town's trip to Salford.
Head coach Paul Hurst said in his pre-match interview with BBC Radio Shropshire there is some ligament damage.
"Morgan Feeney was recovering to tackle Charles (Sagoe Jr) and they both ended up on the floor," Hurst said. "Charles managed to get up and recover, but unfortunately, Morgan has not, his ankle is really swollen.
"I think there is some ligament damage there. It is too early at this time to say how bad it is. Sometimes it can be a good thing, that it swells so much instantly, as it is the body trying to protect it.
"We will have to assess but that is the one I was referring to."
The Town boss made seven changes to his starting XI for the game at the Peninsula Stadium - and he warned his decision to make so many changes has got nothing to do with the fact it is a cup game.
"I just want to make it abundantly clear to everyone. This is not about giving people a game this is picking a team to win the game," he said. "It is not 'It is a cup game so let's change it.' Not at all, that can be misconstrued by the amount of changes. It is just the way that I want to go.
"Yes some people come into the team that have not played much of late but it is very much a team that if it was a league game that was the way to go that is what it is."
