An emergency board meeting was held this morning following the club's FA Cup exit to League Two opposition Salford on Saturday, knocking Salop out in the first round.
Town have managed just two wins in 19 games in all competitions this season and the defeat at Salford marked their fourth consecutive defeat.
In League One, Shrewsbury are facing a relegation battle with eight points from 14 games, losing 10 of them, as they languish second from bottom of the table.
Hurst, who returned to the Croud Meadow in January this year, helped keep the club in the division with a series of battling displays.
But he now departs, alongside assistant Chris Doig, with Town deep in a relegation battle.
