The chairman of almost 30 years relieved head coach Hurst and assistant coach Chris Doig of their duties after a poor start to the season.

A previous statement by the club revealed they had an emergency board meeting on Sunday morning after the team's 2-1 loss at Salford in the FA Cup.

And in that meeting, Wycherley attempted to resign from his role as chairman - something that was then rejected.

He said: "This morning, at our emergency Board meeting, I offered my immediate resignation as chairman but this was rejected by the board as despite all the positive changes we are making to reduce the losses - without my current financial support - we would not be able to continue to fulfil our commitments.

"As a result of that meeting, we were really disappointed to have to let Paul Hurst and Chris Doig leave, as I was personally desperate for them to succeed, but if my 28 years at the helm have taught me anything, it is that nothing can be guaranteed in football.

"Whilst we have maintained a budget that is affordable for our revenue as a club, the external landscape of League One finances have changed immeasurably, which is why I am more determined than ever to find succession.

"Over the past two seasons, I have been on the record in my AGM Chairman’s statement to say this has been the most challenging period of my tenure. This was due to previous stewardship I had placed my trust in, who sadly did not steer the club in the direction I had intended.

"I recently put in place my new Vice Chairman and a new Board, and we are already making great strides to get us back to a sustainable position while we look to secure new investment."

And Wycherley said they are in advanced negotiations with a party looking to buy the club.

He said: "As we move forward, I want to reiterate that we are in advanced negotiations to secure my succession with a party who I believe would be the very best for this football club."
