AFC Telford United want these players to sign new contracts
Kevin Wilkin has admitted he is desperate to tie AFC Telford United stars Remi Walker and Ricardo Dinanga down to longer contracts.
The duo, who are both 22-years-old, have cemented themselves as crucial members of the Bucks’ first team squad with their performances since the start of last season.
And after recent investment from Chris Ball’s American consortium promised a focus on the club developing its own players to stay sustainable, Wilkin is hoping to keep his key players around for more than just one year.
When asked whether he hoped to offer Walker and Dinanga multi-year deals to ward off potential suitors, Wilkin replied: “I would say the answer to both of those questions is yes.
“As I’ve said from right back when I started, they’re the kind of players you want to grow, develop and keep around for the long term. We want the club to develop alongside that kind of player, and we need to find more that are similar.
“They will be fully aware of my intentions, but it’s still early days and they have to stay up to their work and continue to perform.
“The hope is they sustain this form, and when the time is right the conversations will be had, but it needs to be proven that they can do it over a really consistent basis.”
Telford’s squad has a significant blend of youth and experience, with 10 players in their 30s, and six aged 24 or under.
And Wilkin believes finding more players in that younger age bracket is something that will help the club progress.
“They’re a similar age, and not dissimilar in terms of their experiences coming through, obviously Ricardo at Coventry and Remi at Birmingham,” Wilkin said. “Quite how high they reach in the game will be up to them.”
The Bucks boss added: “Ellis Brown is not far behind them, and I think Rhys Hilton will develop to a similar level, it’s just about finding them and developing them.
“When you play at the clubs that aren’t as high-profile as ours you might be given a bit more leeway and time to develop, but the expectations at Telford can be a good thing for them as it makes them used to it as we step up the levels.”
