The 51-year-old has been appointed as Paul Hurst's successor - bringing with him long term assistant manager Richard Dobson.

Ainsworth, who took Wycombe Wanderers from League Two to the Championship during his ten year spell at the club, has been out of work since he was sacked by Queens Park Rangers last year.

The ex-midfielder was Salop's top candidate, according to director of football Micky Moore, and will now be in place when they return to action against Birmingham City on November 23.

The Shrewsbury Town supporters have been reacting to Ainsworth's appointment, and here is a snapshot of what they have had to say

Posting on X, Tom Griff said: "For all the stick that Wycherley and Moore have had this season they deserve full credit for this. A proper coup for us. Now back him."

Russell Cox said: "Fantastic appointment for the Shrews, he will sort you out if you give him time."

Another fan said: "That is a very good appointment. May not play the best football in the world but he will 100% get the job done for you."

Former Shrewsbury Town player Joe Jacobson, who played under Ainsworth at Wycombe has also had his say. He said on X:

J Owen added on X: "Probably the best man for the job, to try keep us up," while Alex Hamilton is looking to the future. He said: "Whether we stay up or not the future is much brighter."
