Picture: Snow fails to stop play in winter bowls league

While other sports were suffering, snow didn’t stop play in the new winter bowls league at Allscott Heath.

Four fixtures that were due to be played on the village club’s artificial green on Tuesday and Wednesday last week were called off in advance for safety reasons.

But when the snow started again just before the two Thursday matches were due to get going, the intrepid bowlers just carried on playing on the all-weather surface.

Allscott Heath bowls club chairman Chris Hayward said: “It was snow day action!

And he asked: “Can you even say that you’ve played in a winter league unless you’ve played in the snow?”

Allscott Buccaneers were one of the teams that braved the snow – and they beat Horsehay 19-14 on points and 83-69 on aggregate in the four singles clash to go top of a table of 18 teams.”

There are two matches in the league every night this week at the venue near Telford, starting at 7pm.
