Ollie Watkins on goalkeeper protection after Aston Villa denied late winner

After a stalemate 90 minutes against the Italian giants - Villa thought they had won it in the third minute of stoppage time when Morgan Rogers swept the ball home at the back post, after Michele Di Gregorio had spilled a cross.

The on field referee gave the goal but VAR intervened and it was chalked off - with Diego Carlos judged to have fouled the goalkeeper.

It was a controversial decision - and striker Watkins pointed to the fact that goalkeeper's are protected in those situations.

He told TNT Sports: "I think it was soft, you know.

"In the Premier League that is a goal but in European competitions it is not.

"Goalkeepers are protected a lot with referees and it is one of them.

"I think it had a 0-0 game written all over it.

"I have to be careful what I say about referees, they are a little bit different in this competition.

"They don't let things go as much as we are used to.

"Sometimes things go for you and then again they are out of our control really."

It was a game that had a lack of clear cut chances throughout with Wakins and a Luca Digne free kick the closest Villa came to scoring.

Emi Martinez then produced a world class save to keep it all square just after the hour mark, with a draw a fair reflection on the game.

And Watkins believes it is a good point for his side to build on moving forward, after a tricky run of results.

He said: "I think it is positive for the fans.

"They come here on Champions League nights wanting to see a lot of goals and we do too.

"It was important not to lose and get a point, we are not in a great moment and this is something to build on.

"Juventus are a massive team, we played well, kept it out and now onto the weekend."
