Ainsworth was victorious in his first game in charge of Salop as they beat Birmingham City 3-2 in League One.

But the impact of the new boss was spreading through the club long before their lunchtime kick-off with Blues last time out.

And Winchester, who was only made captain at the start of the season, says when someone with Ainsworth's CV is appointed as boss, it immediately gives everyone a boost.

"The proof is in the pudding because of what he has done before he has gotten success from it," Winchester said about the club's appointment. "So, it is only a positive that you can take from it. As a player, if you see that he has been in this league and what he has done has worked, then why can it not work for us?"

The 51-year-old and his assistant Richard Dobson have had an impact straight away, and they have been preparing the Shrews players for a busy festive period.

And the experienced Winchester says due to the way Ainsworth is, it is hard not to get swept away with it when they are at the training ground.

"I think an appointment like that does bring a lot of positivity through the door, and people are like buzzing," he said. "He just brings a positive energy to the group even in and around the training ground.

"It is all positive, and he says he has always been like that as a person and he always will be, and it is good to have someone like that."

Salop have won just three times this season in normal time, and their position in the table is still daunting, but they will seek to make a dent in that between now and the New Year.
