Telford v Banbury United - preview

Kevin Wilkin believes another fast start for AFC Telford United will be crucial to setting them on their way to a positive result against Banbury United tomorrow.

The Bucks have had an upturn in form in recent weeks, with goals in the first ten minutes in their previous two wins against St Ives Town and Leiston.

And against a Puritans side struggling to find their feet back at step three, the Telford boss is keen to fly out of the blocks at the SEAH Stadium and secure a third consecutive win.

“Banbury won’t be easy on Saturday, but with our form at the moment we’re starting to show some consistency and aren’t making as many errors as we were earlier in the season,” Wilkin admitted. “Hopefully that continues, and we keep on growing and developing, because it’ll allow us to become the team we want to be this season.”

He continued: “If you’re not focused and concentrated you’ll allow your opponents the opportunity to get their noses in front. We’ve done that on several occasions already this season, but in the last few weeks you’ll see how quickly we’ve started and how well we’ve done off the back of that.

“Teams do come to the SEAH Stadium and look to make use of the good surface and be expansive, so we have to be aware of that and make sure we’re capable of dealing with it.”

With just two wins in their last 12 games Banbury, who have former-Bucks George Forsyth in their midfield, have plummeted to 16th in the Southern Central Premier, but the Telford boss is adamant he will treat them with the utmost respect.

“I’ve not seen (Banbury) live but we have had them watched a couple of times this season, and they wouldn’t be in the position in the table that they would’ve probably hoped to be in at this stage of the season,” Wilkin said. “They’ve not had the best of times lately, but we never underestimate teams and as we say ahead of every home game I’m sure they’ll be lifted by coming to our ground.

“That’s something we have to manage and tackle, because there are teams in and around that area in the league that we haven’t found easy to overcome.”

Wilkin also delivered more positive news on Ellis Myles’ condition, revealing: “He trained fully on Tuesday, so providing he has no problems after Thursday’s session he should come back into the squad.”

The Bucks boss added: “Whilst we’re not in a position at the moment where we’re having to force players straight back into games it probably makes sense for me to run with what we had.

“The ones that have been playing recently have done really well, and when I find a team that’s gelling together naturally I’m reluctant to change it.

“If my hand is forced I can shuffle things around a bit, but as it stands I think easing him back into it would be the best thing for everybody.”
