AFC Telford United hope to capitalise on rivals' slip-ups

Kevin Wilkin admitted seeing promotion-rivals Kettering Town and Halesowen drop points in midweek has made the upcoming Christmas period even more exciting.

AFC Telford United currently sit third in the Southern Central Premier, three points behind league-leaders Kettering who lost 2-1 at Barwell on Monday, and level on points with Halesowen who went down 1-0 at Royston a day later.

With a trip to the Yeltz coming up on Boxing Day for the Bucks, Wilkin agreed that the next few weeks could go a long way to deciding how the league table looks come May.

“There are loads of tough games coming up,” he said. “The results have gone for us this week but it’s important that we make the most of that and focus on winning our game on Saturday.”

Wilkin added: “They’ve had the opportunity to really step on the gas this week and it hasn’t happened for them, and with us not playing it does tighten everything up again and leave that door slightly ajar for us.

“Hopefully it’s building some excitement for people ahead of some really big games over the Christmas period.”

After Saturday's home game with Banbury, Telford will travel to Stourbridge in search of revenge for the 5-1 drubbing at the SEAH Stadium earlier this season, followed by the crunch clash with Halesowen on Boxing Day.

Wilkin commented: “It’ll be really tough going to Stourbridge after they put us to the sword earlier in the season, and then you look at Halesowen on Boxing Day, which is second vs third at the minute; what a massive game that is to look forward to.

“I’m sure we’ll have a strong following for both of those games as we usually do, and if we can bring the points back from them as well it’ll be an enjoyable Christmas, which is exactly what we’re looking for.”
