The Salop head coach has signed the 29-year-old multiple times in his managerial career so far.
So when McCarthy terminated his contract with Wycombe on Tuesday, the rumours started swirling almost immediately about the potential of him moving to Shropshire.
Ainsworth has admitted he is interested in McCarthy and he is very aware of the qualities he could bring to Shrewsbury, but he warned that doing a deal is not always straightforward.
"He is a leader," Ainsworth said. "He's played at a decent level, and he drives people from the inside.
"He was the captain of Southampton's youth team when he was young, and we watched him a few times before deciding to bring him in, and he was better than we expected - he really was.
"There's obviously a big thing about Jason McCarthy and me now because he's terminated his contract and the rumours are going crazy. But believe me, there's loads of stuff to go through here before we can bring anyone in.
"Jason will have been on very decent money at Wycombe Wanderers as well."He's got a young family. He lives down south. All these factors come into it with any player you bring in.
"There's the home life. People don't realise how much a part of that plays.
"But someone like Jason I would be stupid to ignore, and we'll have to see what we can do."
