When it looked like Salop would fall to their fourth successive League One defeat they produced a superb comeback to get a draw against Shaun Maloney's side.
Shrews have made a habit of conceding early goals - and they did it again at the Brick Community Stadium.
Gareth Ainsworth had pointed out before the game the threat that Thelo Aasgaard poses. The Salop head coach said the attacking midfielder will go on to 'big things' in the game.
So it was a surprise that Shrews left him unmarked from a set piece, and when the ball was floated into the box, he smashed it home on the volley.
It was a superbly executed strike, but once more, questions had to be asked about the Town defending.
It took just nine minutes for new goalkeeper Jamal Blackman - who signed as a free agent before the game - to be breached.
Wigan were on the back of a brilliant 2-0 win at Bolton last time out - but they did not click into top gear in the first half of the match.
Their final pass was sloppy, and they moved the ball too slowly.
From a Shrews perspective, they offered very little threat in the first period, but they would have been glad not to be further behind at the break.
A good start to the second was imperative for Shrewsbury, but they conceded a second within eight minutes of the resumption.
Mal Benning gave the ball away inside his own half, and Town were ruthlessly punished as Dale Taylor easily slotted home.
Before that Shrews had a free-kick. Jordan Shipley forced Sam Tickle into a save - it was the only thing the Wigan keeper had to do in the first three-quarters of the match.
Tom Bloxham came on. He was direct, and it was his run that gave Shrewsbury a way back into the game.
He took on the Wigan full-back and whipped in a fierce cross that Will Aimson then turned into his own net.
One of the most unlikely comebacks was completed three minutes from time when George Lloyd capitalised on a mistake from Tickle.
The keeper spilt Bloxham's cross, and the striker was on hand to smash it home and secure a point for Ainsworth's men.
