The club's priority is to remain in the top flight and with Matheus Cunha banned and Toti Gomes, Craig Dawson and Nelson Semedo all injured, it would have been tempting to introduce some youngsters against Championship side Bristol City.

Instead, Pereira only rested goalkeeper Jose Sa and named his strongest available team, even with a midweek trip to Newcastle coming up on Wednesday.

Plenty of managers have disrespected the FA Cup in the past, even Wolves at times.

Yet Pereira came into the game lauding the competition as the world's greatest domestic cup with a long and historic tradition in England - and he is absolutely spot on.

It is a wonderful competition that deserves respect and the strength of the team selection from Pereira was welcomed - sending a strong message to the fans and the players that he is taking it seriously.

And so he should. Not just due to the cup's general importance, but also to breed the kind of winning mentality that Wolves need.

With them battling relegation and with new found hope under their new boss, winning any game that comes their way can only help their cause.

The players will respond to that, too. Every game is there to be won, regardless of the competition and regardless of the opposition. That can only help with the squad's confidence ahead of a crucial few months.

And Wolves, to their credit, started the game fast by imposing their Premier League prowess on Bristol.
