Albion's hierarchy have undertaken a lengthy and wide ranging search for Corberan's successor - after the Spaniard departed the club on Christmas Eve.

The candidates were whittled down to a three man interview shortlist, with former Young Boys boss Raphael Wicky emerging as the front runner as advanced talks took place over the weekend.

However, on Monday it emerged that a deal had fallen through due to issues surrounding his backroom staff.

Rene Hake, a former assistant coach to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, was another candidate who was interviewed by Albion during their process.

Following the news that a deal for Wicky had fallen through, there was debate over whether Albion would re-kindle their interest in Hake.

However, it is understood that no approach or talks with the Dutchman's representatives have taken place since he was turned down for the position.

It is believed he is now subject of interest from clubs in Germany.

Also making up Albion's original three man shortlist was former Baggies title winning boss Tony Mowbray, who has been out of work since departing Birmingham City earlier this year due to health reasons.

Mowbray has spent a number of months out of the game, but it was revealed last week that talks had taken place between Albion and their former boss.

The former defender, who has had a number of successful managerial spells in the Championship, is awaiting the green light to return to work following his health problems.

Following talks last week, it is believed Albion decided to head in a different direction as they pursued a deal for Wicky.

However, following developments earlier this week, it is though the club could still mount a bid to bring the much loved former boss back to The Hawthorns.
