AFC Telford boss on top-of-the-table pressure
AFC Telford United boss Kevin Wilkin has given his thoughts on Telford missing another chance to go top of the Southern Central Premier, admitting it could be playing on the minds of some of his players.
The Bucks would have reached the summit with a win on Tuesday night as league-leaders Kettering Town did not play, but were only able to draw 3-3 away at Royston Town.
It is the third time this season his side have failed to capitalise on such an opportunity, and the Telford boss accepted it can no longer be called a fluke.
“I would like to think it doesn’t have an effect on the team, but that’s the third occasion now where we could’ve gone top of the league if we won and we haven’t,” he bemoaned. “It may be playing on the mind of one or two of the lads – I’m sure they’d all turn around and say it doesn’t though – but it is frustrating that it’s three occasions now.”
Wilkin added: “The reality is there are a lot of closely-matched sides, and I tend to think in a lot of games this season we’ve not quite done enough to win it.”
“We’ve either given too many goals away or not been clinical ourselves, but for sure the biggest issue is the defensive record.”
“You can’t keep scoring three goals on the road and not come away with all three points, that just can’t keep happening.
“The mood after the Royston game was strange to be honest,” the Bucks boss continued. “We did so well to fight back and salvage something from the game late on after we’d spent most of the second half not looking like we would do so, but there certainly wasn’t any celebration.”
