Non-league previews: Shifnal taking title hunt one game at a time
Shifnal Town are staying focused despite a 10-game unbeaten run which left them as the only team close to dethroning Midland League Premier Division Leaders Lichfield City, writes Dan Hickey.
Town are 10 points off the top after a last-minute winner saw them beat OJM Black Country 2-1 at the weekend, however, the third-placed side have three games in hand.
They next face Atherstone Town in fifth, who have five games in hand themselves which, if won, could see them climb to within three points of Lichfield.
Manager Connor Patterson said: “To be honest, we're not really even looking at the league table at this moment in time. We'll just keep taking every game as they come. Keep ticking them off the list.
“Keep building momentum and trying to win games no matter what.”
That mentality was key as the side struggled to get started against OJM, going behind shortly after the break.
“We went to their place," he said. "You know, you get there straight away and you start thinking to yourself: ‘Do I really want to be here?’.
“The changing rooms aren't the best, it was cold, the pitch wasn't great and we ended up going 1-0 down but we managed to get ourselves back in the game and go on to win it in the end, in the dying minutes.
“We know Atherstone’s going to be a tough test, we're just going to go and give it our all. Keep doing what we've been doing and trying to pick up points.”
Whitchurch Alport host Wolverhampton Casuals elsewhere in the Premier Division after their FA Vase success against Clay Cross Town at the weekend saw them draw North Shields in the competition’s fifth round.
In Midland One, AFC Bridgnorth have a chance to move away from the relegation places against an out-of-form Smethwick Rangers side. A loss to Nuneaton Griff and a draw against Lutterworth Athletic has left the side only five points from the drop zone.
There will be a Shropshire derby in North West Counties Division One South as Market Drayton Town host Shawbury United.
Drayton are mid-table with hopes of regaining form to attack the play-off places, while Shawbury currently sit bottom, five points from safety.
Allscott Heath are also in danger as the 16th-placed side travel to promotion candidates Cheadle Heath Nomads.
Ludlow Town have a tough task to bounce back from their 5-0 loss to Wellington as they host Droitwich Spa, the Hellenic League Division One’s runaway title favourites.
Droitwich are eight points clear at the top, with three games in hand on second-placed Wantage Town.
After hammering Wyrley 6-0 in the West Midlands League Premier Division, Telford Town move their focus onto the Shropshire Challenge Cup where they are at home against Wrockwardine Wood.
The quarter-final match sees the visitors hoping to defend their title against a Telford side 18 points clear at the top of their division, while Wood are third in the Salop Leisure League Premier Division.
