Charlton's mixed injury fortunes ahead of Shrewsbury Town clash

Nathan Jones' Charlton side could welcome Kayne Ramsay back into their matchday squad for the game against Shrewsbury - while Gassan Ahadme has a minor injury.

Ramsay has made 11 League One appearances this season, 10 from the start for Jones' side, but he picked up a knee injury in the game against Stockport County at The Valley in the middle of October.

Jones, speaking ahead of Shrewsbury's trip to south London, said the defender is now back training with the Charlton squad ahead of the fixture.

The 51-year-old also provided an update on the fitness of Ahadme, who has missed the last two games with a foot injury.

He said: "Gass (Ahadme), ironically, had Tyreece (Campbell) step on him during the warm-up away at Preston and then after the game his foot blew up, so that’s why he’s been out of the squad in the last two. He didn’t travel with us and has been having treatment.

"He is closer than what he was last week for example but it was not selection-related he picked up a minor injury."

Shrewsbury have had mixed fortunes at The Valley in recent years.

In the 2022/23 campaign, they had a disastrous afternoon under Steve Cotterill as they were hammered 6-0.

But in the penultimate game of last season, the 1-1 draw in south London was one of the highlights of the campaign - it was the day League One safety was secured for the 10th consecutive season.

Salop head into the game looking to build on their brilliant cross-border derby win over Wrexham last week - but they are still to win away from home under Gareth Ainsworth.

And Jones is expecting a tough afternoon from a much-improved Town team.

"It’s a Gareth Ainsworth side so they’ll be well up for it," he said. "I’ve had some fantastic battles with Gareth over the years with his Wycombe side and my Luton side. It’s great to see him back in.

"We always have a mutual respect - we’re the fiercest of competitors and have been over the years. I used to mark him when he played for QPR. His teams are an extension of him in terms of work rate and desire. I hold him in high regard because every time I’ve played a side managed by Gareth Ainsworth it’s a very tough afternoon."
