Albion were already on the hunt for a new forward and that was before top marksman Josh Maja was ruled out with an injury earlier this month.
Tony Mowbray's side have had their eye on a number of targets in recent weeks but so far nothing has materialised with just over three days left in the transfer window.
On Friday, it emerged that Albion were one of the leading contenders to sign highly rated Tottenham Hotspur youngster Will Lankshear.
The 19-year-old England under 20 international is regarded as one of the best young forwards in his age group across the country, and has been likened by some to former Spurs goal machine Harry Kane.
He has followed a similar path to Kane in his career, having been released by Arsenal back in 2021.
From there he moved to Sheffield United, before Spurs shelled out £2m for him a year later. It was the most they had spent on a teenager from an EFL club, since bringing in Dele Ali from MK Dons in 2015.
After a stunning campaign in Premier League 2 last season, where he scooped player of the year after netting 23 goals, Lankshear has broken into the first team picture at Spurs this season.
He made his debut in the Europa League in October, before scoring his first goal in a 3-2 defeat against Galatasaray in November.
Prior to his move to Spurs, he had only spent a year at Sheffield United but had already caught the eye and been tipped for big things.
Speaking back in September, former Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom, who is currently in charge at Preston North End, tipped the young star to go and impress in the Championship if he was sent out on loan.
He said: "He was hungry. He was just what we were all about.
“Jack Lester quickly picked up on his movement in and around the box and thinking like a goalscorer which I think is his biggest attribute.
“When we were coaching him and putting on a session for the centre-backs, him and his movement could destroy a session. His instincts constantly caused problems as a coach and as a defender.
“The way that Ange (Postecoglou) plays, having a No9 occupying centre-backs and trying to play on the shoulder and being good in the box is a big, big thing. Will can do that.
“He makes good runs off the shoulder and he’s all about being alert and alive in the box and finishing chances.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes out on loan and see him scoring goals in the EFL.”
