Castlefields are looking good for the long haul

Castlefields vice-captain Graham Rogers is keeping his eye on the bigger picture in the battle for second place in the Shropshire Premier League.

His team are currently second in the division, 32 points off leaders and defending champions Newport following Friday's 11-3 home win over Bylet.

Sir John Bayley and Meole Brace are just four and five points behind with games in hand but Rogers says that winning that race could help them strengthen in the close season.

He said: "If the club is doing well, people want to sign for you. Newport get one or two every year because they are doing well and people want to go and play there.

"So we want to finish as high as we can and if we could finish second it would be great. But there is Meole Brace and Sir John Bayley up there as well so there's still plenty to play for."

Rogers added that regardless of where they finish, the team has shown some encouraging signs this campaign and it should be stronger next season for coming through a transitional campaign where a number of players have made the step up from the club's Tanners League side to replace more experienced players.

Castlefields made the most of Friday's fixtures, which saw third-placed Sir John Bayley's match at St Georges postponed as a fixture concession, while Meole Brace, fourth, were beaten 10-4 as runaway leaders Newport consolidated their lofty position.

After a tight front four, which was shared 2-2, Castlefields swept the middle four 4-0 and claimed the back four 3-1 for a comfortable victory.

Bylet remain bottom with that defeat and are now 27 points from safety.

Wem have jumped to fifth place with an impressive 9-5 victory at second-bottom Archibald Worthington, while Burway, sixth, defeated Wrockwardine 11-3. Chester Road, eighth, beat Bowring by the same score as did Ifton at home to Hadley.
