This time it was the club's C team, fresh from winning the Mid Shropshire Senior Citizens League's third division, who pulled off a shock success over first division champions Sir John Bayley A in the final at Maddocks.

Madeley made full use of a 24-shot handicap advantage to win by just one shot, Ian Tipton being their only winner from the six games, but his 21-11 card proved decisive.

"It was a fine performance by Madeley Cricket Club C to win after an extremely good final," said league competition chief Nick Stacey.

"After the first three SJB had reduced the 24 handicap to just two – but Madeley's last three did brilliantly to pull off a surprising win, especially after Ken Honnor fought back from 14-1 down to get 11 against John Nash.

"Then Ian Tipton beat Mike Hinton 21-11 and it was left to captain Graham Peevor to get 20 for victory against Gino Farruggio after being 16-7 down.

"It was an excellent and exciting performance and I would like to thank Maddocks for being great hosts and John Ford for refereeing."

It was a second final defeat for the Bayley after losing to Bylet in the division one KO, but they did win the Shropshire seniors consolation cup.
