Meole Brace hit the summit as Bayley boys crash
Meole Brace are the new leaders in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League, as last week’s table-toppers Sir John Bayley tumbled all the way to eighth.
All the matches were tight as Meole won 7-5 at bottom side Hanmer to move five points clear at the summit, with Dave Redge and Andy Wigginton winning the tightest contests 21-17.
But the big story was at Burway, who swept the board against the Bayley boys to lift themselves to second place, while their shell-shocked visitors were left to lick their wounds.
Wayne Rogers (21-7), Peter Griffiths (21-7), Ben Allen (21-8) and Russell Davies (21-9) were Burway’s biggest winners.
St Georges also recorded a huge triumph, dispatching Wrockwardine Wood 11-1, with Phil Clee the only victor for Wood.
Ian Gaut (21-7), Tony Rhodes (21-9) and Dave King (21-9) led the way for Georges, who are now fourth in the standings – one place behind Wem USC, who lost 7-5 at Ifton.
Connor Whitehall, George Williams and Mike Fielder won a trio of 21-20 thrillers for Wem, but Keiron Roberts (21-19), Brian Hayes (21-18) also won a couple of tight games for the hosts, who lifted themselves to ninth.
Simon Tyler’s 21-9 card was Ifton’s biggest of the match.
Dave Payne was in ruthless mood as he dispatched Rob Perry 21-2 in Hanwood’s 9-3 victory over Bylet. Ashley Wellings (21-7), Dave Burton (21-8) and Danny Wornell (21-9) were also in good form.
Bowring overcame Castlefields 8-4, with David Lloyd recording a 21-5 win along the way. there were also 21-20 successes for Keiran Buckley and Aaron King, while Andy Duckett edged one by the same scoreline for the visitors.
Castlefields are now fifth in the table, just one point behind the cluster of teams on 39 points – Burway, Wem USC and St Georges.
Newport were 8-4 victors over Chester Road. Andrew Foster and Martin Lloyd won the opening rinks for Chester Road, but Newport fought back, taking eight of the next nine – including wins from Russell Pegram (21-8) and Sam Millward (21-9) – before Andy Moss recorded a consolation.
