Castlefields savour ‘greatest away day’

The Shrewsbury side, who sit second in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League, enjoyed a big victory on a green where they have struggled in the past.

Adam Jones was their best winner with a 21-6 success over Peter Cookson while Russell Pegram’s 21-12 defeat of Andy Duckett was as good as it got for Newport.

“It was a terrific result and probably one of our best away performances ever,” said Walton. “We played very well, from one to 12 everybody did as much as they could to win the game.

“I don’t think Newport have lost at home for a long while so it was a fantastic performance and the best result we’ve had there.

“It did rain a little bit which took a bit of sting out the green and we had three of the first four winners, which set the tone, and we went on from there.

“We are happy with where we are at the moment but we must take this on now against St Georges on Friday. They and Sir John Bayley will be up there so it’s a big game.”

Castlefields are two points behind table-toppers Meole Brace, who also picked up an away win with victory at Ifton.

The leaders were without several players but still registered seven winners, led by Mark Thomas’s 21-2 success over Keiron Roberts. Adrian Humphries was the hosts’ top man with a 21-15 win over Andy Wiggington.

Wrockwardine Wood put two heavy defeats behind them to record a 9-5 home win over defending champions Sir John Bayley – but the margin of victory could have been bigger.

The Wrockites started well and went 3-1 and 6-2 up before the visitors fought back with three winners at the back.

In a close game of no single figure winners, Andy Jones was best for the home side with a 21-12 win over Gordon Hawkins while former Wrockwardine Wood Open winner Scott Simpson was the pick of Bayley’s five 5 winners, beating Robert Jones 21-10.
