Wem and Burway knocked out of County Cup
Two Shropshire Premier clubs – Wem USC and Burway – bit the dust in round one of the KGJ Insurance County Cup, beaten by league rivals.
Premier leaders Meole Brace made light of being under-strength to beat Burway by 17 shots on Bowring’s old green while Hanwood enjoyed the same margin of victory over Wem USC at Hadley USC.
Recent cup finalists Burway were six shots up after the first four but Colin Beaman’s 21-6 card was the best of three winners in the middle that turned the tide before skipper Mark Thomas and Doug Edwards won at the back to get Meole over the line.
There was never much in it at Hadley but it took Danny Wornell with 11 twos to win 21-6 and Dave Payne’s 21-11 card to give Hanwood victory in what captain Mark Shore described as a ‘a real tight game with Wem’.
The other close tie saw Old Shrewsbury beat District from Whitchurch by 16 chalks at Sir John Bayley.
The Tanners Shropshire League side trailed by 19 after the first four but John Harris and Derek Jones turned it around for them with 21-8 cards.
Hanmer and Newport had walkovers after the late withdrawals of Donnington Wood and Whittington and Premier clubs avoided any upsets in ties actually played.
