He followed in the footsteps of club-mate and 2016 champion Endaf Owens by triumphing at Ponciau Park.

For while Ceiriog Valley may be struggling to defend the First Division crown, Phillips had won his first five league fixtures to stand second in the averages. And it took five more wins for him to come out on top on Sunday, finishing with a 21-9 victory over 2015 title winner Terry Heaton of Llangollen RAFA in the final.

“A total of 32 entries all enjoyed the lovely green and welcome at Ponciau Park Bowling Club in Rhos,” said league competition chief Trevor Roberts.

“Both finalists had got through some tough games, Terry beating Gary Davies in his semi-final to 13, while Megis won through in a cracking 21-20 game against Cynwyd’s Eleri Arbon.

“In a closely-fought final, Megis got an early 12-8 lead and then pressed home his advantage with a handful of twos to win the old trophy, retaining it for the Ceiriog Valley club following Endaf Owens’ win last year.”
