Mixed Emotions for Castlefields
Skipper Keith Walton admitted leaders Castlefields had a tinge of disappointment despite an excellent result at defending champions Sir John Bayley.
The Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League table-toppers chalked up seven of the 12 winners.
But Bayley were just able to claim the victory with a 216-212 aggregate as big wins for Tom Roden and Paul Reeves proved crucial.
Castlefields made a storming start and Walton admitted his side could have come away with even more than seven points.
“We would have been happy getting five or six at the beginning of the night,” he said.
“But after having the first six winners the lads were a bit disappointed. However, overall it’s an excellent result and all the lads played very well. Sir John Bayley are a quality team and will be a contender but they haven’t pulled back any points on us so we are happy with that.”
Paul Williams claimed the best result for the visitors with a 21-10 success over Gary Cooper while Roden’s 21-7 win over Adam Jones was the best for the hosts.
Bagging such an impressive result will have sent a message to the rest of the league, but Walton remains unconcerned about that.
“As long as we are happy with what we are doing then that’s fine,” he added. “
Castlefields are now seven points clear after second-placed Meole Brace were beaten 12-2 at St Georges, who bounced back from losing to Bylet in their previous home fixture.
Colin Beaman and Doug Edwards were the visitors’ only winners while Pete Grimston led the way for the Telford outfit with a 21-2 defeat of Peter Bound. The result lifted St Georges up to sixth.
