Lilleshall Hall’s flat green bowlers have experienced a topsy turvy start to the season – but there has been victory in a Shropshire derby to enjoy.

That came against visiting near neighbours Telford & Wrekin, but it was a match that could have gone either way.

In the end Lilleshall won by just two shots – 62-60 – against Andy Anderson’s team from the Telford & Wrekin club which is based in Hartshill Park, Oakengates.

Lilleshall spokeswoman Liz Caird admitted: “The bowling season is now well under way and the club has had varying success in its weekend friendly matches.

“The club is affiliated to Worcestershire but plays clubs in other areas as well, venturing into Wales two weekends running to play against Newtown and Llansantffraid.

“It is a few years since we last played Newtown but we were invited again this year to mark their 125th anniversary – the club was founded in 1892.

“Their captain recalled the fact that one of our club’s founder members, Dennis Jones, was for many years the treasurer of Newtown and this was how the link and friendship between the two clubs began.

“The result was a narrow win for Lilleshall by just two shots, 66 to 64.

“However, the visit to Llansantffraid was less successful as the club lost that match, 55 shots to 83.”
