Keith Walton: Defending champions are main threat

Keith Walton believes Sir John Bayley will be the biggest threat to his table-topping Castlefields side.

Walton’s men were 10-4 winners against Meole Brace in what was a first-versus-second clash in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League.

But Meole Brace’s defeat and a Bayley victory saw the defending champions jump up to second and Walton sees them as the main danger.

He said: “Bayley are full of quality with some Staffs county players and they will be chasing us down over the second half of the season.” Walton was pleased with the victory over Meole Brace in what was the second in a run of three home games.

“We had three missing so 10-4 was a good result with the team we had, “ he added.

“We played better than the previous Friday and we are about where we should be with 19 points over the two games.

“We had hoped to open up a bigger gap with the home games but it’s not happened because the Bayley have played so well.”

Tomorrow night sees a full midweek programme, with the reverse fixtures taking place on Friday. And Meole Brace skipper Pete Bound is a fan of playing teams in quick succession.

Bound’s men face a double header against Bylet, starting with a trip to Bridgnorth.

“I think it’s a good idea because the conditions should be roughly the same for both matches and that can have a major impact on the result,” he added.

Other fixtures see Castlefields host Wem USC, Ifton go to Chester Road, Sir John Bayley entertain Hanmer, Newport at home to Hanwood, Burway at St Georges and Wrockwardine Wood play Bowring.
