Kieran Jones picks up victory in hard fought final

Kieran Jones comes from good bowling stock, but now he’s fast making a name for himself.

Already established in the Shropshire junior team, the youngster is the new Harold Kaye champion of the Tanners Shropshire League.

He won the Shrewsbury-based league’s under-18 singles title by beating Pontesbury’s Kelly Price 21-17 in a topsy-turvy final at Telepost.

Jones, who bowls for the George in the Tanners league, led 9-1 and then trailed 17-15 before running out – much to the delight of bowling parents Kevin and Jane and his grandfather Neville Edwards, a past British president.

Happy organiser Graeme Wornell said: “Sixteen players took part, double last year’s entry, and play was to a very high standard and in a good spirit.

“The semi-finals saw Kieran win 21-19 against Prince Hotel’s Susie Lawson and Kelly beat Unison’s Matt Parry 21-11.

“In the quarter-finals Matt beat Matt Beck (Old Shrewsbury) 21-17, Kelly beat Rhys Marshall (Prince Hotel) 21-17 – a win matched by Susie against Burway’s Camilla Parsonage while Kieran beat Jordan Woodfield.”

Wornell has now changed the date and venue for the Tanners Youth Doubles to July 6, at Meole Brace No.1 to give bowlers extra practice on the green ahead of their county match against North Midlands.

“Entries should come to me (07974 623828), and only one player in each pair has to be registered with the Tanners Shropshire League,” stressed Wornell.
