Castlefields launch off the foot of table
Castlefields are no longer bottom of the Summit League Premier Division after a whitewash against Dudley Dell.
The Shrewsbury-based club clinched a resounding 10-0 (168-123) victory on home soil over the third-placed outfit, jumping up two places to eighth.
Leighton Roberts was their MVP as he scored the hosts’ best result, 21-9 over Simon Homer.
Castlefields are ahead of Penn and fellow Shropshire outfit St Georges on aggregate, ahead of a reverse fixture with a vengeful Dell on Monday.
Skipper Mark Taylor said: “We were just happy that we got back to winning ways – and to do it by winning all eight games was a real bonus.
“It was really good to get the eight winners, and we had to really battle in the first four – Nicky Jones fought back to win his game 21-20.
“Then it was up to the final four to see it through – and they did just that so we were really pleased.
“We were feeling good going into the game with a few players back and hopefully we can build on that now.”
Prior to Monday’s win, Castlefields lost 9-1 to league leaders Greville Arms and Taylor cited issues with unavailability and holidays as a factor.
With unavailability becoming less of a worry, the captain is searching for some consistency so they can be looking ahead rather than over their shoulders.
“We are not far away at all from being at full-strength now,” added Taylor.
“We are looking to have a really solid team between now and the end of the season.
“Going away to Dudley on Monday, we are hoping to give a good performance and a good account of ourselves.
“We would like at least four points from it, if not to push them all the way and try and get the win, and then be in good shape for the next home game (against Tamworth In Arden on July 24).”
St Georges have slipped two places to ninth following a narrow defeat at bottom club Penn.
Although the games were shared at four each, the hosts earned their two bonus points by edging the aggregate score 147-138, with Jason Groom (21-9) their top scorer.
The two sides clash again on Monday, with St Georges at home this time around.
In Feeder A, Wrockwardine Wood ran out comfortable winners on home soil.
Following a 9-1 drubbing at the hands of Moseley the week prior, they beat Windmill 8-2 (162-119).
They are eighth in the table ahead of Monday’s reverse fixture.
Hadley USC are back to winning ways in Feeder B.
The third-placed outfit beat Woodfield A 7-3 (157-131) at home, and face them away on Monday.
