Castlefields are top of the league

They were deducted two points by the league for fielding an unregistered player at Ifton on July 7.

An 11-3 triumph (236-169 on aggregate) at Burway, though, leaves them 18 points ahead of their nearest challengers, Sir John Bayley.

Steve Freer recorded their best result with a 21-7 success over Mark Rogers.

Bowring were also 11-3 (237-191) victors, against Meole Brace on home soil.

They are now sixth out of the division’s 14 teams, and vice captain Robert Roden said: “It was chucking it down all night apart from the back four, but the green was fine all night, really.

“I thought that all of us played really well. It was a very good result.

“To have nine winners against a very good, experienced side like Meole Brace is testament to how well our young lads are doing at the moment.

“We have played well over the last month or so and us being sixth, I think, is a really good achievement as our side is pretty young, mainly 25 and under.

“I have played in the Premier League for eight years now and this is the best it has been in terms of competitiveness.

“There is a big home advantage and there is not a lot to separate the sides, especially in mid-table, so to be where we are, being realistic, is really good.”

Third-placed Newport won 9-5 (220-209) against Wrockwardine Wood.

Russell Peagram got their best result as he beat Andrew Jones 21-10.

St Georges were the other winners as they beat Chester Road 10-4 (230-177).

Hanmer against Wem USC, Hanwood against Sir John Bayley and Ifton against Bylet all fell foul to the heavy rain.
